If 99.9% of your efforts in life now go towards fulfilling your purpose, then a mission statement for life and work will make you extremely effective with the other .1%.
A lot may be said regarding mission statements. I'll just quickly list three points.
1. Mission statements, when prayed out and defined clearly, provide an effective tool for helping you make life's decisions (from the seemingly minor daily decisions to the really big ones).
2. Your mission (for life and work) should line up with your God given gifts and the way He has specially made you.
3. There is a great book out on defining your mission and vision statement for life. I recommend reading it. The book is: The Path: Creating Your Mission Statement for Work and for Life
by Laurie Beth Jones3
I used this book several years ago to define my life's mission statement. The exercises were great and resulted in several personal epiphanies.
This is what an editor said about the book on Amazon:
In a world in which we are daily forced to make decisions that lead us either closer to or further from our goals, no tool is as valuable in providing direction as a mission statement -- a brief, succinct, and focused statement of purpose that can be used to initiate, evaluate, and refine all of life's activities.

On the CWM Forums: What is your mission statement? Want to see others?
I hesitated in developing this article. I was concerned it would be too preachy or just not be appropriate for our site's content. However, the CWM staff encouraged its publication. I'm glad they did. I pray something here may be helpful to at least one person out there (maybe you).
My final piece of advice is to not stress over decision-making. In the end, I believe we are called to simply trust in the Lord with all our heart, to lean not on our own understanding, and in all our ways to acknowledge Him. Then, He will direct our paths (and make them straight).
