Introductions Don't Have to Be Flashy

5. Illness: You have a nice flashy intro page

Prescription: Drop it

Many sites have a nice looking intro page, usually with a lot of nice graphics or programmed in rich media such as flash. The problem is (at this time) search engines cannot read the content of image files or flash files. So you may have a nice initial presentation, but not have enough legible content for search engines to index.

Also, and this is very important, many cannot not follow image based or flash based links. This means that a search engine might hit your site intro page and then not go any further into your site because it had no links to follow.

The key is to do a nice looking introduction page with good content. Have text based links to all important areas of your site. Your intro page should tell visitors about your site, and then act as a portal (launch pad) to other areas of your Website.

I know you are saying, ?But I want too keep that cool flashy intro to my site.?
That?s okay, you can. Place a link on your new optimized intro page that says ?view our flashy intro?.

6. Illness: Your site is saying too little in your introductions

Prescriptions: Add more copy to the intro page

Website Doctor?s Notes:

Many intro pages have too little copy. Remember the goal of search engines is to provide relevant content to their users. If your site has little content, then you have little chance of showing up in the search results.

Currently industry standards recommend having webpage content with a word count of between 300 to 750 words with a keyword density of 3%-5%.

What?s a keyword density? ? This is the percentage of keywords or keyword phrases you have on your page in relation to the total word count.

It is a balancing trying to keep your keyword density up high enough that you achieve good search result rankings, but to not cross the line into spamming by keyword stuffing your site.

Your goal should be to write good rich content for your site audience and it will draw people looking for that content to your site. Remember industry recommendations for search engine optimization change and evolve but the goal of search engines to provide good search results with relevant content will not.

Have the copy on your intro page become a portal to the rest of your site with keyword optimized text links to other important pages on the site.
